In 2006, people in the U.S. purchased more than eight billion gallons of bottled drinking water. Looking at the statistics another way, the average person in the U.S. consumed almost 28 gallons of bottled drinking water. Many of those decided that rather than carry water home from the store, they would order drinking water online.
How to Order Drinking Water Online
Get the facts before you order drinking water online. Look at the online companies, and read all information they offer about their water. Look for information such as the following.
* Source: Before you order drinking water online, be sure you know where the bottler gets the water. Many, such as Dasani and Aquafina, draw it right from the tap. They bottle municipal water, i.e. tap water. The Coca-Cola company, which bottles Dasani, claims to “enhance” the water with minerals, but much tap water also contains minerals. One company labeled their water “spring water” and showed a picture of a mountain lake, but the water’s true source was beneath an industrial parking lot near a hazardous waste site. Before you pay to order drinking water online, learn the source of the water. If the bottler does not list the source clearly, contact them and ask specifically whether or not the water is from a municipal water supply.
* Additives: Learn about additives before you order drinking water online. Some bottlers add minerals. Some add fluoride, vitamins, or electrolytes. Some even add disinfectants. These additives are not always listed on the label, nor are they listed clearly on the bottlers’ websites. Ask questions. If you decided to order drinking water online to ensure healthy drinking water, you want to know what it contains. The FDA defines bottled water as water intended for human consumption, sealed in bottles or other containers with no added ingredients – except a safe and suitable antimicrobial agent. Fluoride may be added within set limits.
* Natural Contents: Check on the natural contents of the water at its source before anything is added. Some bottled water sources have been found to contain lead. You do not want to order drinking water online and then learn that it contains lead. Some sources contain Cryptosporidium parasites. Tests for this parasite are not recommended by the FDA, and need not be performed. Since FDA standards are lower than the EPA that regulates water flowing into your bathroom, bottled water may actually be less acceptable than bathroom tap water.
* Plastic: Finally, you should not order drinking water online before knowing the quality of plastic in which it is bottled. All plastic bottles used by bottlers must be stamped on the bottom with a number in a triangle. If that number is #1, the plastic used will leach into the bottled water.
